Twenty Four

I had trouble getting up the next morning.

With a bit less than eight hours solid sleep, and no dreams, thankfully, we were about half way to the Keerah world. One jump done while I was asleep, one coming up in a few hours, and then the run in to an actual Keerah world.

I’d been to them in the past, but only to destroy all the military hardware in the system, and then move on. The whole concept of deliberately docking with one of their stations should have been giving me nightmares, but if I’d dreamed about it, I didn’t remember it.

There were a number of fox groups on the navmap, but there were staying well clear of us. My guess was, they’d be doing a run to the moose planet after we left them behind. That wasn’t my problem now, but Fleet Admiral Paxton’s.

I’d missed running again. The day promised to be a lot less stressful, and for the first time, with no likelihood of us being attacked. Although that was assuming the Keerah didn’t betray us now. I lay there thinking about that, and was finally forced to rise by Zac, who reminded me I was about to miss breakfast. I made it there in time after a fast shower and underwear change. Of course, I’d slept in my suit again last night. It was becoming a habit I needed to break.

The mood in the mess was quite buoyant. The marines were swapping firefight stories, and the pilots were mainly trying to listen to them. But they all stopped when I walked in. There were no Ralnor. They’d gone back to Wonderland as soon as they were no longer needed on the battleship, to lessen the chance of their unique life signs being detected by the tigers.

“Morning,” I said. “Carry on.”

The chatter started up again, and I had a full plate of food and a drink placed in front of me the moment I sat down. I suddenly felt starving, and began wolfing it down, to the amusement of some of the pilots. I slowed down as the plate emptied, and began taking an interest in conversations, but not joining them. Most of them had finished eating by now, and as I put my cutlery down, and drained my glass, conversation stopped, and they all looked at me.

“What’s our day look like, skipper?” asked Swat.

“We’re a bit less than eight hours from the Keerah world. And yes, that will be a bit freaky for those of us who’ve not actually been to one before.”

Growly caught my eye and nodded. I hadn’t even seen him come in after me.

“I’ve got nothing planned for this morning, other than me catching up on some running before lunch.” That got a few smiles. “You need to stay on the ship in case the Keerah are monitoring our life signs. But as far as I’m concerned, today is a day off. The foxes are going to leave us alone, and until we arrive at the Keerah world, nothing much should happen.
